Cleanroom Flooring Types
2024-10-25
Most of the contaminants in a cleanroom are present on the floor and it is important to consider choosing the suitable flooring for the application.
Main types of cleanroom flooring:
- Rubber – Cold Welded
- Seamless Vinyl
- Epoxy Coating and Screeding
- MMA – Methyl Methacrylate Flooring
- Polyurethane
- Dummy Testing
- Raised Flooring
Rubber Flooring
We highly recommend rubber flooring sheets that are then cold welded in place and polished clean.
Industrial and life science facilities can use rubber floor coverings to better meet a wide range of operational and design requirements.
From ultra-hard wear resistance that withstands constant forklift operation to static dissipative grounding flooring for cleanrooms and research labs handling sensitive electronics, rubber floor coverings offer superior durability, unique design options, and cost-effective, easy-to-maintain industrial flooring solutions.
For industrial operations and life science research labs and production areas, KoLB rubber floor coverings set a new standard for quality, function, and design.
Vinyl
Seamless vinyl flooring is a cost-effective solution for small cleanrooms that do not require the load-bearing capabilities of elastomeric coatings such as epoxy, polyurethane, or MMA.
Seamless flooring can also cover walls, making walls and corners easier to clean.
Disadvantages: Cannot withstand repeated heavy loads.
Epoxy Coatings
Epoxy coating systems are designed to enhance the aesthetics and protective properties of a surface. The best situation for specifying a coating is when the concrete substrate is in good condition with minimal peeling or cracking. Because epoxy coatings are dense, seamless, and have low porosity, they are easy to clean and maintain. Coatings are available in a variety of colors, allowing you to match the new look of your floor to the rest of the environment.
The system is typically applied at a thickness of 10-25 mils to fill in small imperfections in the floor surface so there is some levelness. The coating is often recommended for assembly and light fabrication areas.
Epoxy coatings have good to excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals and are easy to clean, while polyurethanes offer better stain resistance.
Applications involving contact with harsh chemicals may require a corrosion control system.
- Coatings for Concrete, Metal, and Painted Floors
- High gloss reflective coatings available
- Wall coatings
- Easy to clean and maintain
- 100% solids and waterborne coatings available
- Dense and seamless with low porosity
- All colors available
- Excellent impact and abrasion resistance
- Environmentally friendly
- Low odor

ESD Control Systems In industries involving electronic components or volatile chemicals, static electricity can cause significant damage, injury, and financial loss. Even when people are equipped to handle static sensitive devices, unintentional contact can occur. ESD floor, wall and ceiling coatings and top surfaces can tie the entire ESD system together.
Polyurethane Formulations
Key Benefits:
Polyurethanes are highly resistant to abrasion and impact, and are highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, such as hydraulic fluids, jet fuels, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, gasoline, acids, bases, alcohols, and many others. Polyurethanes
Able to withstand heavy traffic and repeated cleanings, and still provide a flawless appearance.
Polyurethane systems can be used with non-slip materials.

Polyurethane systems can be used with non-slip materials.
- UV resistant
- High gloss to satin finish
- Excellent abrasion resistance
- Superior stain resistance
- Two-component
- Light reflectivity for workplace lighting
- Excellent gloss retention
VCT
Vinyl Composite Tile – VCT
While not often used in pharmaceutical or healthcare cleanrooms, VCT can be used in Class 7 and Class 8 electronic cleanrooms as an affordable flooring option.
It can be purchased in an electrostatically dissipative (ESD) configuration.
Disadvantages: Has more seams and requires extensive maintenance.
Raised Floors
Raised floors are used to maintain laminar flow from the HEPA filter ceiling directly to the floor, and also as a method of accessing equipment services.
Raised Floors – Solid Panels
Benefits of Solid Panels:
- Available in a wide range of conductive and static dissipative coverings or coating
- Contains no ferrous material that would interfere with the magnetic field
- Panel-to-base contact ensures continuous conductivity
- Excellent rolling load performance
- Lightweight and easy to handle
- Flame spread and smoke development rating: Class A
