Perform a Moisture Assessment Test
Because mortar drying times vary with environmental conditions and the types of admixtures and aggregates used, it is nearly impossible to accurately predict drying times. To ensure that the mortar is completely dry, the mortar contractor should perform a moisture assessment before installing the vinyl flooring. Two commonly used tests are the calcium carbide test and Tramex.
The calcium carbide test is the most accurate way to determine the moisture content of mortar. The method involves placing a small sample of mortar in a sealed container along with calcium carbide. The moisture in the sample will react with the calcium carbide to produce acetylene gas, with a pressure gauge measuring the pressure exerted by the gas. Workers can use the readings from the pressure gauge to calculate the exact amount of moisture present in the mortar.
The Tramex meter can be used to instantly determine surface moisture. While this method is more convenient than the calcium carbide test, it is less accurate. If necessary, the calcium carbide test can be used to verify the Tramex meter reading.
